I'm waiting for my LSI RAID card to come in. I'm actually building a VCSP POC box out of an old HP z420 tower. Probably looking at a T440 for 3.5" bays.maybe even something lower. With that said, I'm looking to build a Veeam appliance. That's when I came across with the bright idea of using a tower in a rack configuration. I did look at the R740xd2 but the numbers didn't work. Partner (deal registered) pricing obviously was good but there markup in the mix. I think the cost of parts and my labor were in the neighborhood of 18k. He has 6 empty drive bays for some expansion and if we throw in a 12Gb SAS HBA we can DAS connect to his newer PowerVault ME4024 and add another DAE if needed. RAID 5 would net you 132TB or 122Tb in RAID 6.

RAID 10 because of the number of cameras he has with constant data streams.

T640 rack mount with dual 480GB M.2 SSD for the OS and (12) 12TB 7.2k SAS drives in RAID 10 formatted ReFS for 64TB usable. I recently built a NVR/VMS for a client recently. To restate what I said elsewhere and add some. I still stand by my tower in rack mount for the best density of large capacity disks in a single server without the extra cost of the higher end chassis. You could put (18) 14TB disks in a RAID 5 for 238TB if you just want sheer capacity and add that 12Gb SAS HBA for connect a MD14x0 or whatever current model DAS for expansion.Įdit: Just saw OP was looking at the xd2. He has 6 empty drive bars for some expansion and if we throw in a 12Gb SAS HBA we can DAS connect to his newer PowerVault ME4024 and add another DAE if needed.

That's said, if you do a T640 (and rackmount kit if you want to rack mount) you can do (18) 3.5" drives for data and a BOSS card for the OS.
VEEAM BACKUP SERVER REQUIREMENTS PLUS
You could put a lot of drives in a R540.pretty sure it's 14 3.5 drives.12 on front and 2 on the back in the PCI flex bays plus a BOSS card for the OS.
